Our Coaches
We proudly develop our talent right here, in our Durham HQ. Starting his journey as head coach of 5th Element Jiu Jitsu Academy in 2019, Reece now has three main coaches and numerous assistant coaches and volunteers responsible for delivering a busy training schedule of daily morning and evening classes.

Most of our classes have at least two coaches on the mats. Inclusion and integration are central to our club, with mixed ages, abilities and backgrounds training together. All coaches at 5th Element Jiu Jitsu Academy are enhanced DBS checked, first aid and safeguarding trained and qualified in accordance with British Martial Arts & Boxing Association (BMABA)

Meet Our Coaches
Reece
Reece began training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in 2012 at the age of 18, first inspired by watching MMA and developing a strong interest in grappling. From the outset, he was drawn to the technical and competitive side of the sport, quickly committing himself to training and development.

Now a 1st degree black belt, he has competed extensively throughout his career, with over 300 competitive matches across multiple rulesets. His achievements include more than 15 IBJJF medals, 4 British titles, and becoming No-Gi Black Belt British Champion. He has also competed internationally across the UK, Italy, Switzerland, France, Portugal, the USA, and Japan.

Alongside his competition career, Reece has built over a decade of coaching experience, including 7 years coaching full-time. He currently leads the Gold programme for kids, as well as coaching adult beginners, full members, and supporting the development of aspiring professional athletes within the academy.

His coaching style is detail-oriented and systems-based, focusing on clear concepts, structured techniques, and efficient, high-percentage application. His approach prioritises effectiveness, clarity, and long-term understanding of Jiu Jitsu rather than isolated techniques.
Danny
Danny began his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu journey at the age of 23, joining 5th Element Academy in November 2019 after developing an interest through MMA. What started as a single weekly Foundations session quickly grew into a consistent training routine, driven by his passion for learning and steady improvement.

Like many beginners, Danny faced challenges early on, but it was the small milestones—such as successfully applying techniques in live sparring—that kept him motivated and committed to progressing.

After earning his blue belt, Danny was given the opportunity to assist in classes. It didn’t take long for him to realise that helping others develop was just as rewarding as his own progression. He gradually moved from assisting to leading portions of sessions, and eventually took on full classes as his coaching role continued to grow.
In March 2025, Danny became a full-time coach and is now a key part of the 5th Element team. He is passionate about helping students develop not only their technical and competitive abilities, but also their confidence, mindset, and personal growth.

Danny takes pride in creating a positive, supportive environment where students can enjoy their training, push themselves to improve, and be part of a strong community—something he believes is at the heart of the academy.
Jake
Jake began his Jiu Jitsu journey at the club in 2021 as a complete beginner and has since progressed to purple belt through consistent training and competition.

With multiple years of coaching experience across both group classes and 1-to-1 sessions, Jake plays a key role in the Bronze kids programme. He is passionate about helping new students take their first steps in grappling and focuses on creating a safe, enjoyable environment where children can build confidence, resilience, and strength.
His coaching style centres on making learning accessible and engaging, ensuring every student feels supported as they develop their skills.
Olly
Olly joined the gym in 2021 through the kids’ programme, initially just looking to try something new. He quickly developed a passion for Jiu Jitsu and progressed through the ranks with a strong focus on training and competition.

In early 2025, Olly stepped into a coaching role and has become a key part of the team. He leads within the beginners’ evening classes and coaches the Silver level of the kids’ programme.

Olly focuses on building strong fundamentals while creating a positive, friendly environment where students can develop confidence and enjoy their training.
